Project Objectives: MAR-LSD, which is a proposed project under the IAMU Organizational Development Project FY2023, supports calls for a shift from instruction paradigm in Maritime Education and Training (MET) to learning paradigm, where MET institutions produce knowledge through student discovery and construction of knowledge.

The project aims to improve the teaching skills of maritime academics through the effective use of Active Learning (AL) pedagogies. External stakeholders of the partnering institutions in the IAMU members including graduates and industrial partners/actors will collaborate with maritime academics to align the skills set of students with industry needs. The project aims to complement the ambition to create an innovative AL system by developing a digital tool -a new generation co-learning platform- to support engagement and collaboration with the internal and external stakeholders of the IAMU partner institutions to create communities of learning.

Accordingly, the objectives of the proposed project are (i) aligning skill sets of maritime students and graduates with industry needs, and (ii) improving teaching skills including pedagogy, curriculum and/or assessment capabilities of maritime academics, which are not conceptually distant if higher education institutions (HEIs) are to improve the quality of learning with a totalistic approach to learning.

Furthermore, the proposal addresses two IAMU key purposes of the IAMU Tasmania Statement including (i) to create a well‐educated global maritime workforce and leaders of the future (ii) to be the authoritative voice of maritime education, training and research. In the context of Objective 6 in the IAMU Tasmania Statement, this project provides the key principle of the objective – “ensure the provision of a skilled maritime workforce” by working with marine safety authorities – as the voice of MET training – with IMO and the international maritime industry. Additionally, this project meets the one of the specific notes for Organizational Development Projects in the call document – “An Organizational Development Project can include but is not limited to developing teaching materials and textbooks that can be used by member universities”.
